“Lagunas de Lo Monte” Municipal Natural Area in Pilar de la Horadada

The Municipal Natural Area is located at the north of the urban centre of Pilar de la Horadada, belonging to the region of Bajo Segura, at the south of the province of Alicante. It is a 10.3 hectare area, including two lagoons with an area of almost 80,000m2, which are located in the area of Lo Monte, very near to the Dehesa de Campoamor.

The lagoons were built in 1989 to purify waste water through the lagoon system and currently maintain their flow due to the contributions of Waste Water Treatment Plants, which have a tertiary treatment, after which the lagoons accumulate water to later use in agriculture and for watering gardens.

The area is a stopover for animals in migration, its strategic location between the las Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia) and the Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja (Alicante) Natural Parks making it very attractive.
